Nephew of Wajir Governor Mohamed Abdi implicated in KSh 26 million vehicle fraud.

Wajir Governor Mohamed Abdi’s Nephew Linked to KShs26M Car Fraud

Allegations have emerged implicating Wajir Governor Mohamed Abdi’s nephew in a significant car fraud case amounting to KShs26 million. According to reports, the Governor’s nephew’s wife was allegedly the recipient of Ks12 million diverted from the purchase of a second-hand vehicle. This revelation has sparked investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), shedding light on a graft ring involving family members colluding to defraud the county.

Formation of the Graft Ring

The investigation has uncovered collusion between the Governor’s nephew, identified as Jimale, and two directors of a construction company. Together, they allegedly conspired to siphon funds from the county government under the guise of purchasing vehicles. However, only one second-hand vehicle was acquired, despite the misappropriation of millions of shillings.

Investigation Findings and Legal Actions

Further investigations revealed that the fraudulent money had not been properly accounted for in the county’s financial budget. In July 2018, KShs26 million was transferred to Daayo Limited, a company associated with the Governor’s nephew. Out of this amount, KShs14 million was purportedly used to purchase the vehicle, while KShs12 million was wired to the spouse’s account. Consequently, the EACC has taken legal action, freezing accounts belonging to the construction company and impounding the purchased vehicle, a Landcruiser V8, for inspection and valuation.

Previous Incidents and Public Perception

This is not the first time relatives of the Wajir Governor have been implicated in fraudulent activities. In 2017, Mohamed’s wife faced arrest over a KShs74 million debt owed to three businessmen. These incidents raise concerns about governance and accountability within the county, impacting public perception and trust in leadership.
